12WRC 2014. On August 16th and 17th, the 12th World Rogaining Championships 2014 was based in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Several hundred athletes from across the globe will convened in western South Dakota to compete in teams of two or three in pursuit of the World Rogaining Championship title.

The World’s is a 24-hour long-distance cross-country navigation race for teams traveling on foot by map and compass. The object is to score points by finding checkpoints (orienteering flags) within the allotted time.  Sanctioned by the International Rogaining Federation (www.rogaining.com) in coordination with Orienteering USA (www.orienteeringusa.org), the World’s was organized by Peak Assurance with course design by Rick Emerson and hosted by the Black Hills Orienteering Club.

The site for 12WRC 2014 was the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, offering world-class recreational opportunities as evidenced by past events like Primal Quest Badlands 2009, the Dakota Rogaining Championships, the Black Hills Fat Tire Festival, Nash Hash 2008, and others.

Rapid City is the closest metropolitan area with a regional airport serviced by four major carriers (Allegiant, American, Delta/Northwest, and United) and connections to eight major hubs (Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Mesa/Phoenix, Minneapolis, and Salt Lake City).

Tourism is a major industry in the Black Hills, with attractions like Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, and the Badlands in close proximity. Numerous lodging opportunities range from campgrounds to cabins, and from hotels to vacation homes. The Black Hills National Forest has 30 campgrounds with more than 682 individual sites. Many accommodation options will be available in mid-August, a week after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Where the deer and the antelope roam, the Black Hills are also home to much wildlife including elk, Rocky Mountain big horn sheep and goats, plus a few mountain lions thrown in to boot.  Plan to come early and stay late, as there are numerous sites to experience and great expanses to explore.

Black Hills National Forest

Over 1.25 million acres of pines intermingled with aspen, birch, and oak.

Paha Sapa - Lakota for “hills that are black”.

With terrain varying from prairie to pinnacles and from canyons to mountains, orienteers will be hard-pressed to find a more fitting challenge with such diversity.
